GREEN BAY,
Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The
Green Bay women's tennis team continued Horizon League play over the weekend by
splitting a pair of home contests against UIC and Valparaiso at Western Racquet
and Fitness Club. The Phoenix improved to 2-9 overall and 1-2 in the conference
after earning a 6-1 victory over the Crusaders on Sunday following a 6-1 loss
to the Flames on Saturday.
On Sunday against Valpo, the Phoenix took two of the
three doubles contests to secure the doubles point before winning five of the
six singles matches en route to its first league win.
"It was a good team effort for the win today," Phoenix
head coach Sara Schubring said. "We'll
continue to work on shot tolerance and our transition game as we prepare for the
rest of the conference season."
Seniors Morgan Weuve (Green Bay, Wis.) and Jennifer Bradfield (Fairfield, Iowa) started things off with an 8-4 win over the
Crusader duo of Megan Barthels and Kristin Zakiewicz at the No. 1 doubles spot.
Bradfield then won her No. 1 singles contest over Barthels 6-2, 6-3, while
Weuve came from behind to beat Kaitlyn Hamel 4-6, 7-5, 10-5 at No. 2.
"Bradfield served big in both singles and doubles, and
she and Morgan (Weuve) stayed aggressive throughout the duration of their
doubles win," Schubring said. "Weuve also showed great resiliency after
dropping a set in singles. She was able to jump out to early leads and keep the
pressure on by closing into the net."
Freshman Amanda Timm (Milwaukee, Wis.) was also a two-time winner for the Phoenix on
Sunday, pairing up with fellow freshman Samantha
Iwen (De Pere, Wis.) for a dominating 8-2 victory over Valpo's Angelina
Goheen and Michele Fredlake at No. 3 doubles while winning her No. 3 singles match
6-3, 6-3 over Stephanie York.
Junior Maria Anderson (Marshfield, Wis.) earned a win at the No. 4 singles spot on
Sunday, defeating Fredlake 3-6, 6-4, 10-3. Rebecca Nelson (Brookfield, Wis.) was also victorious in singles action, beating
Zakiewicz 6-2, 6-3.
Green Bay is set to start stretch of four straight
road matches against Horizon League competition, beginning with a trip to
Cleveland State and Youngstown State next weekend. The Phoenix is set to face
the Vikings on Friday at 7 p.m. in Cleveland, followed by a 6 p.m. showdown
with the Penguins in Youngstown, Ohio on Saturday.
