INDIANAPOLIS (GreenBayPhoenix.com) -
The second-seeded Green Bay
men's tennis team picked up a 4-1 victory over No. 6 Butler Saturday
afternoon in the semifinals of the Horizon League Championships at
Indianapolis Racquet Club East. The Phoenix advances
to the conference title match for the second consecutive season and
will face fourth-seeded Cleveland State on Sunday in a rematch of last
year's championship.
After
dropping the doubles point to start the day the Phoenix bounced back
quickly and closed out the Bulldogs with straight-set victories in the
top four singles spots.
Green Bay's
three all-league picks came through with wins on Saturday, as first-teamers
Paul Swanson (Coon Rapids, Minn.) and Michael Tenzer (Neuried, Germany) won at the top two spots, while second-team selection
Erik Finkenbrink (Duelman, Germany) secured the match-clinching point at No. 3.
Junior
Craig Cox (Surrey England) also notched a win for the
Phoenix, knotting the score at 1-1 with his 6-0, 6-4 victory against
Butler's Pulok Bhattacharya at No. 4. Green Bay took the lead with
Tenzer's 6-4, 6-0 rout of Tommy Marx at the No. 2 spot,
and Swanson's 6-1, 7-5 win over fellow first-teamer and Horizon League
Newcomer of the Year Austin Woldmoe at No. 1 extended the margin to 3-1.
The
match ended when Finkenbrink was able to put away Zach Ervin 6-3, 6-4
at No. 3, sending Green Bay to the Horizon League title match for the
fifth time in school history.
Green
Bay and Cleveland State will square off at 12:30 p.m. CT on Sunday at
the Barbara Wynne Tennis Center on the campus of North Central High
School in Indianapolis. The Vikings, who defeated top-seeded Wright
State 4-0 on Saturday, are looking for their fifth consecutive
conference crown, while the Phoenix is aiming for its first
championship. Cleveland State defeated Green Bay 4-1 in last year's
final.
The Phoenix took the regular season meeting between the two schools, picking up a 5-2 win on April 7 in Cleveland.
Sunday's Horizon League Championship match will be carried live on the
Horizon League Network.
