BOARDMAN, Ohio (GreenBayPhoenix.com) -
Juniors Maria Anderson (Marshfield, Wis.) and
Rebecca Nelson (Brookfield, Wis.) were both two-time
winners on Saturday as the Green Bay women's tennis team defeated
Youngstown State 5-2 to improve to 2-3 in Horizon League play and 3-10
overall.
Anderson and Nelson paired up at No. 2 doubles to defeat the Penguins' duo of Lauren Hankle and Gimena Puppo 8-2,
helping the Phoenix secure the doubles point and an early 1-0 lead.
Anderson and Puppo then squared off at the No. 4 singles spot, with Anderson prevailing 6-1, 2-0. At No. 5, Nelson
powered her way past YSU's Jennifer Moore 6-0, 6-1 for her second victory of the day.
Also picking up a singles win for the Phoenix was freshman
Amanda Timm (Milwaukee, Wis.), who after dropping her first set to Carolyn Jesko at No. 3 came back for a 1-6, 6-3, 10-6 victory. Timm
and Samantha Iwen (De Pere, WIs.) won by default at the No. 3 doubles spot, while Iwen also won by default at No. 6 singles.
Green Bay will continue its four-match Horizon League road swing next weekend when it travels to Wright State (Saturday
at 10 a.m.) and Butler (Sunday at 2 p.m.).
