VALPARAISO, Ind. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay women's tennis team (1-17) earned its first victory of the spring season on Saturday afternoon, defeating Valparaiso 7-0 in a road contest at The Courts of NWI. The Crusaders dropped to 1-14 with the loss, while the Phoenix bounced back from its 7-0 setback at UIC on Friday to bring its Horizon League record to 1-2.
The Phoenix began the day by taking two of the three doubles matches to earn the doubles point, and then swept the six singles contests – four of them in straight sets.
In doubles, sophomore Amanda Timm (Milwaukee, Wis.) and senior Rebecca Nelson (Brookfield, Wis.) teamed up for an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles over Valpo's Kristin Zakiewicz and Michele Fredlake, while freshmen Stephanie Londre (Burlington, Wis.) and Rachael Menos (Appleton, Wis.) collected an 8-4 win over Angelina Goheen and Lauren Kammerer at No. 3.
Singles play saw Timm earn a straight-set win at No. 1 over Zakiewicz (6-4, 7-5), and Maria Anderson (Marshfield, Wis.) and Nelson dominate their singles contests at No. 3 and No. 4. Anderson cruised past Fredlake 6-0, 6-1 in the third spot, and Nelson took down Megan Barthels 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4.
Also earning singles victories were Londre at No. 2 (6-1, 2-6, 10-4 over Kaitlyn Hamel), Samantha Iwen (De Pere, Wis.) at No. 5 (3-6, 7-5, 11-9 over Goheen) and Eleanor O'Brien (Northfield, Minn.) at No. 6 (6-3, 6-2 over Kammerer).
Green Bay will play its first home contest since March 1 this weekend when it begins a three-match homestand at Western Racquet and Fitness. The Phoenix first plays Youngstown State on Saturday at 6 p.m., and then welcomes Cleveland State on Sunday at 2 p.m. The team wraps up the home stretch next Saturday (April 13) versus Wright State at 6 p.m.
