PEORIA, Ill. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay women's tennis team (0-5) headed to Peoria, Ill., this weekend for a pair of dual matches. The first match featured Western Illinois (1-9), who was also in search of its first victory of the season. The Phoenix came out strong and claimed its first doubles point of the year, but was unable to continue the momentum in singles, falling to the leathernecks 4-3. After dropping the decision to Western Illinois, the Phoenix moved on to its next match against host Bradley (6-3). Green Bay was unable to claim a point in the dual with the Braves, falling 7-0 in its final match of the weekend.
“We came out strong winning all 3 doubles matches, but our team couldn't continue the momentum in singles,” said head coach Sommer May. “ We didn't play our best tennis today, it's disappointing."
In the matchup with Western Illinois, all three of the doubles decisions went in favor of Green Bay. Olivia Headford and Samm Pedersen were paired up at No. 1 doubles for the Phoenix, defeating Lubber/Wallace 6-4 to claim the match decision.
Stephanie Londre and Lauren Miketinac battled Western Illinois' Demos/Jones at No. 2 doubles, with Londre/Miketinac claiming a 6-2 victory for the Phoenix.
At No. 3 doubles, it was the combination of Noel Peck and Maria Neff that sealed the doubles sweep for Green Bay, winning 6-1 in convincing fashion over Johnson/Hale.
Junior Rachael Menos stepped in for the Phoenix at the No. 5 slot and battled Western Illinois' Andriana Johnson. Menos handedly claimed the first set 6-1, but Johnson came back strong in the second set and defeated Menos 6-4 to force a third. However, Menos did not falter in the final set, defeating Johnson 6-1 and claiming the point for Green Bay.
Freshman Maria Neff continued to play at a high level after the doubles win, adding a singles victory to her match résumé after defeating Jamee Hale 6-1, 6-1.
Green Bay was unable to pick up a point in the matchup with Bradley, falling 7-0 to the host Braves to end the Weekend.
The Phoenix women will be off from competitive action until Feb. 28, as they travel to Fort Wayne, Ind., to take on IPFW.
