GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay women's tennis team (1-12) claimed its first victory of the season today, winning the Battle of the Bay after downing St. Norbert College 4-3. The Phoenix dropped the doubles point in the contest but used singles victories from Stephanie Londre, Olivia Headford, Maria Neff and Rachael Menos to pick up four points and the match decision.
Londre claimed the first singles win for Green Bay, downing Manlick in straight sets (6-1, 6-1). The next singles victory came from Headford, who defeated Ake 6-1, 6-4 to pick up the point for Green Bay.
The next singles victory was turned in by Neff, defeating the Green Knight's Gosz in straight sets (6-3, 6-3). St. Norbert responded by picking up singles victories on the No. 3 and 4 courts to tie things up at 3-3 with one match left in play.
Menos was the lone Phoenix left playing with the match knotted up at three apiece. After starting out strong and claiming the first set 7-5, Menos let the second set get away from her to force a third. In the final set Menos used the court well and picked up the 6-2 set win, sealing the 4-3 victory for the Phoenix.
Green Bay also had a match against in-state competitor UW-La Crosse earlier in the afternoon. The Phoenix dropped the match 4-3 against the Eagles, but picked up the doubles point after a victory from Olivia Headford and Samm Pedersen on the No. 1 court, and a win at the No. 3 slot from Stephanie Londre and Maria Neff.
Neff picked up a singles win in the matchup, defeating Weyahn on the No. 3 court 6-4, 6-4. Menos picked up the other singles victory in the match for the Phoenix, coming out on top at the No. 6 slot over Fleming 6-3, 6-2.
The Phoenix women will be off from competitive action until April 3, as they travel to Chicago, Ill., to take on UIC in Horizon League play.
