GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay women's tennis team returned to the court for the first time of the season on Friday night, falling 6-1 to Cardinal Stritch at Western Racquet and Fitness Club.
“I thought we came out and played pretty well in doubles,” said head coach Daniel Bickett. “I was really impressed with Chiara [Berg] and Jule-Sophie [Hermann] in their first college match for the Phoenix. Overall, I thought it was a good start to the season and a good point to build off.”
The visiting Wolves opened play by taking the first two doubles matches, leaving the third featuring Olivia Headford and Berg unfinished. The Phoenix duo led 5-3 against Alexi Loomis and Natalie Grieve before it was called.
In singles, the freshman Berg picked up her first collegiate victory at No. 3 singles, winning 4-6, 7-6, 10-5 over Luise Gruber, while Cardinal Stritch swept the remaining five matches to clinch the 6-1 decision.
Green Bay (0-1) will travel to Omaha, Neb., next Friday, Feb. 5 to take on Nebraska-Omaha. It won't return home until March 4 vs. Chicago State.
