CHICAGO - The Green Bay women's tennis team opened up the 2018 season on Friday evening at Chicago State, falling 6-1 in its first official match of the year. Samm Pedersen picked up the team's lone win at No. 5 singles, while the team battled hard all match.
"The women fought hard, despite being short-handed due to injury. It's not easy mentally to face that, but they showed some grit," said head coach Tim Dean. "Lost a lot of duece points in doubles which hurt us. We had several tight first sets, which is a positive sign. I'm happy with our effort in our first match of the season."
The team was forced to play with only 5 players, with its sixth player battling injury. This handed a point to CSU at No. 6 singles and gave them the win at No. 3 doubles, forcing the Phoenix to sweep No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.
Pedersen picked up the win in her first action of the year, winning 6-4, 4-6, 10-8. The senior was able to grind out the dramatic third set win, despite her team being down 6-0 at that point.
Green Bay visits Western Illinois tomorrow morning for a 10 a.m. serve time.
