Tony Leto and freshman
Stevie Young both participated in Flight F, each making their way to the final round after byes in the first round. Young grabbed additional wins over Olivet and Marquette with scores of 6-4, 6-2 and 7-6, 6-3, respectively. Leto took on a Cardinal Stritch player 6-1, 7-6 and bested a Butler opponent to make it to the final round. In the elder vs. younger battle, Young took the first set 2-6. However, Leto came from behind, taking the second set 6-1 and contending to a lengthy 10-7 third set to remain undefeated.
Junior
Ivan Radomirovic was also the unbeaten victor in Flight G, capturing his second Purdue Fall Invitational singles win of his collegiate career
after winning Flight E last year. He took down Valparaiso in straight sets before besting three other competitors from Toledo, Olivet, and Illinois State to win the bracket.
Along with those three, four other Phoenix competed in singles. Senior
James Ling, an
All-Conference Second Team member in the 2017-18 season, participated in a tough Flight A, narrowly dropping the first match to a DePaul player 7-6(4), 7-6(1), but turning around to take down a Horizon League foe, Cleveland State's Benjamin Slade, 6-4, 6-4 in consolations and a Toledo player 7-6, 6-4 to pull off a 3-1 record.
Charlie Croxford saw a similar story in Flight B. The senior fell 6-2, 6-2 in the first round to a Butler opponent but then handily took down a Toledo competitor 6-2, 6-4.
Miles McDowall, also a senior, joined his classmates in becoming a consolation champion. He fell 7-5, 6-1 to a Toledo player, but received a bye and then a hard-fought win over a Butler competitor 7-6(4), 6-3 in Flight E. Newcomer junior
Lachlan Napier also contended in this bracket, grabbing a gritty 6-2, 5-7, 10-8 victory in the opening round before bowing out after a loss to a Purdue Northwest opponent.
The weather forced cancellation of doubles play on Saturday and continued Sunday with only main-draw competition. Nevertheless, the team of Napier and Ling made it the furthest, conquering teams from Illinois State (7-6), Horizon League foes from IUPUI (6-4), and Ball State (7-5). They took home a silver plaque after placing second in the championship match of Flight B, 6-2.
Every other squad lost their first round, winning afterward. The squad of McDowall and Croxford lost their first match 6-3 against a Cleveland State pair but dominated a Cardinal Stritch duo 6-2. Likewise, the team of senior
Charlie Ridout and Leto fell 6-4 to Niagara, but then bested Horizon League members Wright State 6-4 afterwards. Finally, Young and Radomirovic fell to a DePaul and Wright State combo 6-3, but took down a Valparaiso-Chicago State pair to conclude the invitational.
The Green Bay men's tennis team will compete at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships in South Bend, Indiana in the coming weeks, with play occuring from October 17-22.
