GREEN BAY,
Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Green
Bay freshman Michael Tenzer
(Neuried, Germany) has been selected as the Horizon League's Men's Tennis
Player of the Week for the period of Feb. 13-19, the conference office
announced on Monday. Tenzer went a combined 7-0 in singles and doubles, leading
the Phoenix (8-1) to a 4-0 record over the weekend.
"Michael has picked up right where he left off after
having a great freshman fall season," Green Bay head coach Mark Thomas said. "He has been fabulous in both our singles and doubles
matches. I am very excited to see Michael progress over his career at Green
Bay."
The newcomer split time between No. 1 and No. 2
singles, winning each of his four matches in straight sets. On
Friday in the Windy City, he routed Chicago State's Mario Naboa 6-0, 6-1 at
the top spot after beating IUPUI's Luke Bielawski 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2. In
Sunday's home contests against the University of Chicago and UW-Whitewater,
Tenzer beat the Maroons' Ankur Bhargava at No. 2 (6-3, 6-1) and the Warhawks'
Byron Balkin at No. 1 (6-0, 6-3).
Tenzer also went unbeaten in doubles action, teaming
up with fellow freshman Felix Goepper
(Seelbach, Germany) for a trio of wins against IUPUI (8-6), Chicago (8-4) and
UW-Whitewater (8-4) in the No. 2 slot.
Tenzer's weekly award marks the first of his career,
and the second
time a Phoenix player has been honored this season (Craig Cox (Surrey, England), Jan. 31).
Green Bay, which is 8-0 since dropping its season
opener at Western Michigan on Jan. 27, returns to action Saturday with a road
match at DePaul in Chicago at 6 p.m.
