GREEN BAY,
Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - After leading
his team to a 2-0 start in conference play over the weekend, Green Bay senior Paul Swanson (Coon Rapids, Minn.) was
selected as the Horizon League Men's Tennis Player of the Week for the period
of March 26-April 1, the league office announced on Tuesday.
In Green Bay's 6-1
win over UIC in the conference opener on Saturday, Swanson cruised past James
Li 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles before dominating Valparaiso's Chris Baum 6-3, 6-2
in the top singles spot on Sunday. Swanson also paired up with fellow senior Henning Jess (Kaltenkirchen, Germany)
on Sunday for an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles to help the Phoenix (13-5, 2-0) to a 7-0
sweep of the Crusaders on Senior Day.
Swanson becomes the third different Phoenix player to
earn the weekly honors this season, as freshman Michael Tenzer (Neuried, Germany) was named player of the week on February 22 and junior Craig Cox (Surrey, England) won the award on January 31. It also marks the second time Swanson has won player
of the week, as he was also recognized as a sophomore in 2010.
Swanson and the Phoenix are set to begin a stretch of
five straight road matches against Horizon League opponents to end the regular
season, starting Friday with a 3 p.m. contest at Youngstown State. Green Bay
then heads to Cleveland State on Saturday for a meeting with the defending
conference champion Vikings at 10 a.m.
