ABOUT GREEN BAY (6-13 overall, 2-4 HL)
The Phoenix enters the tournament on a two-match losing streak after falling to No. 3 UIC and No. 4 IUPUI on opponent courts. All of Green Bay's victories this season have come from home games, meaning that the team has quite the road block to overcome this weekend. The men entered the season favored to finish third, but ended up fifth after falling to IUPUI and UIC in the last week of league play.
Four players go into postseason with Horizon League awards under their belt: seniors
James Ling,
Miles McDowall,
Charlie Croxford, and junior
Lachlan Napier.
Ling received All-Horizon League First Team recognitions for being a strong asset to the Phoenix all season. The remaining
three each picked up Horizon League Player of the Week honors after Green Bay swept Northern Kentucky and Wright State at home April 6 and 7, respectively. McDowall was chosen as Singles Player of Week while Croxford and Napier received Doubles Team of the Week.
McDowall and Croxford also were named to the Horizon League All-Academic Team after a strong showing in the classroom.
On the court, the Phoenix are led by Ling at the No. 1 singles position, who holds an overall season record of 8-8. Napier, at the No. 5 slot, has collected the most wins in league play, with a record of 3-3. Meanwhile, the doubles team of Croxford and Napier have proven to be the most successful, boasting a perfect 4-0 in conference matches in the No. 3 spot, while the No. 1 pair of Ling and McDowall sit at 8-6 overall and 2-3 in the league.
GB will pursue its fourth tournament championship all-time, winning in 2012, 2014 and 2015. The team also finished runner-up in 2016 and 2013. Cleveland State is the defending champion, and enters the championship as the number one seed. The winner of the Horizon League Tournament will receive an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.Â
