GREEN BAY,
Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - For the second
week in a row, Green Bay senior Paul Swanson (Coon Rapids, Minn.) has been selected as the Horizon League Men's
Tennis Player of the Week - this time sharing the award with Detroit's Cesar
Escobar Serrano for the period of April 2-8.
Swanson went 2-0 at No. 1 singles over the weekend as
Green Bay picked up road wins over Youngstown State and Cleveland State to improve to 15-5
overall and 4-0 in Horizon League play.
On Friday, Swanson dominated Youngstown State's Tariq
Ismail 6-2, 6-0 at the top spot to help the Phoenix to a 4-3
win over the Penguins. The following morning, Swanson picked up a tough,
three-set (6-4, 4-6, 6-3) win over Cleveland State senior Yannick Goossens - a 2011
First-Team All-Horizon League performer - as the Phoenix earned a 5-2
win over the four-time defending conference champion Vikings.
In doubles action on Saturday, Swanson also teamed up
with fellow senior Henning Jess
(Kaltenkirchen, Germany) for an 8-5 win at No. 3 to secure the doubles point
for the Phoenix.
Swanson's award marks the third of his Phoenix career,
as he was also chosen as Horizon League Player of the Week as
a sophomore in 2010 prior to receiving the honors last
week. He is also the third different Green Bay player to earn the honors
this season, as freshman Michael Tenzer
(Neuried, Germany) was
named player of the week on February 22 and junior Craig Cox (Surrey, England) won
the award on January 31.
Green Bay - which is tied with Wright State (15-4,
4-0) atop the conference standings - has just three regular season matches
remaining before the Horizon
League Championships in Indianapolis on April 27-29. The Phoenix first
travels to Wright State (Saturday at 2 p.m.) and Butler (Sunday at 10 a.m.)
this weekend before wrapping up its five-match road stretch against Detroit in
Valparaiso, Ind., on April 21.
