Ken Hess was a stout defender during his time with the Phoenix and played a leading role in the first two teams in Green Bay men's soccer history. In 1970, the program's second season, he led the team to their first postseason bid in Green Bay soccer history. For his efforts, he was added to the NSCAA/United Soccer Coaches All-Region, All-American, and was given the team's Most Valuable Player award. During his time with the Phoenix, GB went 22-4-4. Hess, a New Jersey native, became Green Bay's first athlete to receive All-American recognition in soccer.
